Irish designer Paul Costelloe is one of the most well known and established designers in British fashion. From a cutting edge design process to the use of luxurious fabrics, Paul Costelloe is renowned for his high fashion collections. After becoming Princess Diana’s personal designer in 1983, Costelloe has been giving us opulent collections and high quality homeware ranges.
We were invited to go and see the presentation of the newest SS22 collection at Costelloe’s atelier studios during this season's London Fashion Week. The runway show for the collection is available to watch online, on the British fashion council's website.
The presentation was an immersive experience, with Paul himself. There were two models, showing complete looks from the collection- giving us a better idea of how it can be styled. The rest of the collection was displayed around the studio for us to look at and admire.
All of Costelloe’s collections are designed completely by hand, and at the presentation we were able to look through the sketches by Paul, and see the design process of the collection.
The collection was influenced heavily by ancient Celtic art and the manuscript of The Book of Kells. Using scripture from the book as motifs and throughout patterns, and adding some hints of traditional Celtic styles within different designs. It was made with bespoke linen fabrics, sourced from Ireland’s oldest linen fabric mill. Opulent cotton and fabrics blends sourced from Italy, giving the collection a luxurious high quality feel.
The colour scheme goes from neutrals and creams, to translucent blues - giving an extremely summery fresh feel to the collection. There are accents of white and gold tones within the collection, including accessories.
Every season, Costelloe delivers elevated yet classic designs throughout his collections. Costelloe’s designs are long-standing throughout the history of British fashion. With stories and depth behind every piece and decision- we look forward to every season to see what will come next from Costelloe.
